English 0745336094 "Children of the Welfare State" uses the case of Denmark employed as emblematic of the European state to consider the ways in which children are civilized within child-focused institutions, such as schools, daycare, and the family unit, under the auspices of the welfare state. Through deep ethnographic studies, the authors build a clear account of children s experiences at a variety of ages, different genders, and from differing ethnic and social backgrounds. Ultimately they show that even though Danish welfare institutions are marked by a strong egalitarian ideal, they nonetheless tend to reproduce dominant norms of social class and distinctions of ethnicity and religion. ", Children of the Welfare State uses the case of Denmark--employed as emblematic of the European state--to consider the ways in which children are "civilized" within child-focused institutions, such as schools, daycare, and the family unit, under the auspices of the welfare state. Through deep ethnographic studies, the authors build a clear account of children's experiences at a variety of ages, different genders, and from differing ethnic and social backgrounds. Ultimately they show that even though Danish welfare institutions are marked by a strong egalitarian ideal, they nonetheless tend to reproduce dominant norms of social class and distinctions of ethnicity and religion., This original ethnographic study looks at how children are 'civilised' within child institutions, such as schools, day care centres and families, under the auspices of the welfare state. As part of a general discussion on civilising projects and the role of state institutions, the authors focus on Denmark, a country characterised by the extent of time children use in public institutions from an early age. They look at the extraordinary amount of attention and effort put into the process of upbringing by the state, as well as the widespread co-operation in this by parents across the social spectrum. Taking as its point of departure the sociologist Norbert Elias' concept of civilising, Children of the Welfare State explores the ideals of civilised conduct expressed through institutional upbringing and examine how children of different age, gender, ethnicity and social backgrounds experience and react to these norms and efforts. The analysis demonstrates that welfare state institutions, though characterised by a strong egalitarian ideal, create distinctions between social groups, teach children about moral hierarchies in society and prompts them to identify as more or less civilised citizens of the state., This original study looks at how children, aged 3 to 18, are 'civilised' within child institutions, such as at school, in childcare and in the family unit, under the auspices of the Welfare State. The authors focus on Denmark, a country they see as emblematic of the European state, and which, while viewed as of the most un-dogmatic and socially liberal countries, still shows that many of the methods and practices used tend to problematically reproduce norms of social class and distinctions of ethnicity and religion.Through deep ethnographic studies, the authors take time to present a specific focus on children's experiences and children from a variety of age, gender, ethnicity and social backgrounds are observed. The authors conclude that Danish welfare state institutions, though characterised by a strong egalitarian ideal, create distinctions between social groups, teach children about moral hierarchies in society and prompts them to identify as more or less civilised citizens of the state.
